Taste, season, cold, and how to plant this one.
- Taste
- Smaller fruit than a Florida pear, with higher oil and a nuttier bite. The Mexican race is the cold-hardy side of avocado.
- Ripens
- Winter, as the name says. A useful gap when the summer Florida varieties are finished.
- Zones
- Zones 8b to 11.
- Hardiness
- Among the tougher avocados we sell. It still is not a freeze-proof shade tree — cover a first-year graft.
- Size
- Moderate. Many stay easier to manage than a West Indian giant.
- Tips
- Good choice if your yard is a touch colder than downtown Naples, or if you want winter fruit.
- Pollination
- Plant with a Florida type-A tree if you can. Two races in one yard cover more of the year.
