Taste, season, cold, and how to plant this one.
- Taste
- A football-shaped sapodilla. The flesh is smooth, brownish red to caramel, and very sweet when fully soft. It is not a salmon mamey.
- Ripens
- Pick when the sandy brown skin scrapes easily and the fruit is full size, then ripen it indoors until it gives like a ripe pear. Green fruit is full of latex.
- Zones
- Zones 10 to 11.
- Hardiness
- A tropical evergreen. Frost hurts young growth. Naples is the right climate; a cold inland lot is not.
- Size
- A dense evergreen, often kept around 20 feet with pruning, taller if left alone. Glossy leaves, slower than a mango.
- Tips
- Plant high, in full sun, and do not bury the graft. Water the first summers, then it handles dry spells better than most tropicals.
- Pollination
- Self-fruitful. A second sapodilla can still improve a light set.
