- Taste
- Ripe fruit is soft, very sweet, and vanilla-scented — the ice-cream name is the flavor, not just a story.
- Ripens
- Fingers are silvery blue before they ripen, then pale yellow and soft. Cut the bunch when the ridges round off and ripen it off the plant.
- Zones
- Zones 8b to 11 with protection on the cold edge.
- Hardiness
- A bit tougher than Cavendish. Leaves still burn in a frost, but a mulched corm often returns.
- Size
- About 12 to 15 feet. Give the clump room to walk around.
- Tips
- Best flavor comes from fully soft fruit. Underripe Blue Java is starchy. Keep the mat watered and don't bury the corm.
- Pollination
- No partner needed.
