Taste, season, cold, and how to plant this one.
- Taste
- The atemoya most Florida growers trust: sweet, custardy, with the usual black seeds. Gefner sets more reliably here than many annonas.
- Ripens
- Late summer and fall. Fruit is ready to cut when it loses its bright green hardness and starts to give.
- Zones
- Zones 10 to 11.
- Hardiness
- Well adapted to Southwest Florida compared with true cherimoya. Still protect young trees from freezing.
- Size
- About 15 feet with a light prune. A sensible dooryard tree.
- Tips
- Mulch, but keep it off the trunk. Water in a drought or the fruit drops. Hand-pollinate the evening flowers if you want a real crop.
- Pollination
- Self-fertile on paper, much more productive if you hand-pollinate.
