Taste, season, cold, and how to plant this one.
- Taste
- Large oval Florida fruit, smooth green skin, light buttery flesh. A slicing avocado more than a rich Hass.
- Ripens
- Warm-season crop, summer into fall. Fruit holds on the tree; it does not ripen until you pick it.
- Zones
- Zones 10 to 11.
- Hardiness
- Protect young trees below freezing. Established Catalina handles a Naples winter in a normal year.
- Size
- Give it 25 feet of canopy room, or commit to pruning.
- Tips
- Stake the graft the first year. Avocado roots are shallow — mulch, and don't cultivate under the drip line.
- Pollination
- A second avocado with the opposite flower type improves the crop. We can match one from the bench.
